Chinese internet search-engine company Baidu aims to be mass producing driverless cars within five years, reports Xinhua news agency, citing company president Zhang Yaqin. Speaking at an industry conference in Tianjin, Zhang stated that Baidu will carry out road tests of its driverless cars in 10 cities in China with the aim of commercialising the technology within three years and beginning mass production within five years. Baidu has already completed initial road tests of automatic driving technology and has plans for more road tests under different weather and traffic conditions.
Significance: Baidu has partnered with German automaker BMW to develop autonomous driving with a joint "head towards automated driving" (HAD) project. Baidu has also stated it aims to test its autonomous driving technology in the United States, while in China the company has signed an agreement to develop a test zone for autonomous cars. According to Zhang, the core technology of Baidu's driverless cars is the "Baidu car brain", which includes high-precision electronic mapping, positioning, sensing, and decision-making and control systems.
