Customer LoginsIndian government reveals guidelines for EV charging infrastructure
The Indian government has mandated all public charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs) to install fast chargers including Japanese CHAdeMO and Chinese CCS as well as Bharat DC and AC, reports the Business Standard. The government also laid out new rules that allow private charging at residences and offices, in addition to de-licensing setting up public charging stations and offering priority connections for setting up such stations. The government laid out distance criteria and asked one charging station to be set up in an area of 9 km2 and one charging station every 25 km on both sides of highways or roads. As part of the first phase, public charging infrastructure will be rolled out in all cities with a population of four million or more over the next three years, along with the existing expressways and important highways connecting these cities. In the second phase, big cities such as state capitals and territory headquarters will be covered.
Significance: The Indian government has been trying to finalise a standard charging format as part of its initiatives to encourage sales of EVs in the country. The latest decision will bring some clarity on the charging protocol, the absence of which has been cited to have delayed procurement by Energy Efficiency Services (EESL). The distance criteria defined by the government will help to address anxiety about range among buyers. Recently, an EV start-up based in Noida, EV Motors India, partnered with DLF, ABB India, and Delta Electronics to install 6,500 EV charging stations in the country over the next five years.
