Toyota is witnessing a very positive response to its new C-HR compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) in the Japanese market, with 48,000 advance orders for the model.
According to a Dow Jones Newswires report, orders for the new C-HR have reached eight times of Toyota's monthly sales goal within a month. Of the total 48,000 bookings, orders for the hybrid variant were 37,000, while the turbo version represents 11,000 orders.
Significance: Toyota's C-HR SUV went on sale in mid-December 2016 in Japan.
When unveiled, Toyota said it aimed to sell 6,000 units of the C-HR every month in Japan. Key features contributing to the healthy demand of the model include the option of a hybrid variant, offering fuel efficiency of 30.2 km/l (based on the Japanese government's JC08 test cycle), qualifying it for Japan's eco-car tax benefits. It is the second nameplate, after the Prius, to be fitted with the company's new modular Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) platform. The vehicle's price range has been kept between JPY2.51 million (USD21,847) and JPY2.90 million. According to IHS Automotive light-vehicle sales data, Japanese sales of the C-HR are forecast to reach 96,715 units in 2017, accounting for 6.1% of the automaker's total sales in the country.
The new model, an addition to Toyota's sparse compact-SUV line-up, will compete in the domestic market with the likes of the Honda Vezel, Suzuki Ignis, Mazda CX-3, and Nissan Juke, according to IHS Automotive data.
